Our Movember Motivation
Part 2: Claire

Movember is a powerful charity event for so many reasons. It means even more to us at Churchill Hui as we have team members whose lives have been affected by the challenges Movember aims to tackle – that’s prostate cancer, testicular cancer, suicide and mental health.

For our “Movember Motivation” series, Director Claire Crook has kindly shared her reasons for participation.

Although Movember is a campaign pushing to improve men’s health, it’s fully supported by both men and women. Like many people, Claire has male friends, family and colleagues who have been through, or are going through, challenging times health-wise.

“I have a husband, sons, male colleagues and friends, and the state of men’s health is worrying. Look at the facts: every 60 seconds a man commits suicide. Prostate cancer rates will double in the next 15 years. Movember is a light-hearted response to raise awareness and funds for these serious issues and the whole team is getting involved.”

Claire’s participation, along with other Churchill Hui ‘Mo Sistas’ is not as hairy as growing a Mo (moustache). It’s still a challenge though. Each of them has to complete 60km in November by ‘moving’. Thanks to her involvement with global initiative parkrun, Claire is tailwalking 5km every Saturday morning as a volunteer at Bedfont Lakes parkrun. To supplement this, she is making some commutes on foot and going for walks with her family. This weekend she walked the perimeter of the Queen Mary Reservoir – one of London’s largest reservoirs – which was specially opened to the public for one day only.

Whilst it is not just men that suffer from cancer, suicide and poor mental health, Movember recognises that men need specific types of help and services that will encourage them to talk to friends, family or health professionals about their symptoms and state of mind. Claire says:

“Movember has ambitious goals and it feels good to be part of something so powerful. By 2030 the state of men’s health could be significantly improved through the work Movember is doing, which is why we have chosen to get involved again this year.”

You can sponsor the Churchill Hui team “Masterley Moustachery and Movement” at https://moteam.co/masterly-moustachery-and-movement-churchill-hui. We’re raising funds and awareness for all the dads, brothers, sons and mates in our lives to stop men dying too young.
